Enabling Honorlock in Atomic Assessments for Brightspace
This article walks instructors through the process of setting up Honorlock proctoring for an Atomic Assessments exam in Brightspace. Honorlock is configured as a third-party assessment within the Honorlock LTI tool, and the Atomic Assessments assignment URL is used to link the two platforms together.
Before you begin, make sure you have:
- Instructor or administrator access to a Brightspace course
- Honorlock 1.3 added to your course navbar
- An existing Atomic Assessments assignment published (or at minimum saved with a URL)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Navigate to Honorlock in Brightspace
- Log in to Brightspace and open the course where the exam will take place.
- In the course navbar, click Honorlock 1.3 to launch the Honorlock tool.
Step 2: Register a Third-Party Assessment
- In the Honorlock interface, click the hamburger menu (☰, the three-line menu icon) in the upper left or corner of the panel.
- From the dropdown, select Register a Third Party Assessment.
This option tells Honorlock that your exam is hosted on an external platform (Atomic Assessments) rather than natively inside Brightspace.
Step 3: Configure the Assessment in Admin Settings
Once on the assessment registration/admin settings page, complete the following fields:
Assessment Name
- Enter a descriptive name for the exam (e.g., BIOL 101 Midterm Exam – Spring 2026).
Start Date and End Date
- Set the start date and end date for the proctoring window. Students will only be able to launch the proctored session during this window.
Assessment Platform
- Change the Assessment Platform dropdown to Access through the LMS.
This tells Honorlock to use a direct URL to reach the assessment, rather than looking for a native quiz inside Brightspace.
Platform Name
- In the Platform Name field, type: Atomic Assessments
Step 4: Copy the Atomic Assessments URL
- In a separate browser window or tab, open your Brightspace course and navigate to the Atomic Assessments assignment you want to proctor
- Copy the full URL from the browser address bar while the assignment is open.
- Return to the Honorlock registration page and paste the URL into the Assessment URL field.
Tip: Make sure you copy the URL while the assignment is in its student-accessible or preview state to ensure it resolves correctly for test takers.
Step 5: Set a Password (Optional)
- If your institution or exam policy requires it, enter an exam password in the password field.
- Students will be prompted to enter this password when launching the proctored session.
- Leave this field blank if no password is required.
Step 6: Configure Proctoring Settings
Review and adjust the Proctoring Settings and Test Taker Guidelines as appropriate for your exam.

Tips & Troubleshooting
- Students see a blank screen or access error: Confirm the Atomic Assessments URL copied in Step 4 is correct and that the assignment is published and within its availability window.
- Manual Review is grayed out: Ensure at least one of Record Webcam, Record Screen, or Room Scan is enabled.
- Students cannot enter the session outside the proctoring window: Verify your start/end dates and times are set in the correct timezone.
- Honorlock 1.3 is not visible in the navbar: Contact your Brightspace administrator to confirm the LTI tool has been added to the course.
