How to: Take an Atomic Assessments in (Students)

Atomic Assessments integrates with Honorlock to provide secure, proctored assessments outside your Learning Management System (LMS). This guide walks you through the complete process — from launching your assessment to submitting your session.

Before You Begin

You must have the following before starting a proctored Atomic Assessment:

Google Chrome installed on your device
The Honorlock Chrome extension installed.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Launch the Assessment from Your LMS

Within your LMS (Canvas, Brightspace) , navigate to your course and locate the Honorlock LTI link. In Canvas this is within the course navigation links, within Brightspace this is on the Course Navbar. Click it to open the Honorlock Launch Page, which will track your overall assessment progress and guide you through each step.

Step 2: Accept Terms and Launch Proctoring

On the Honorlock Launch Page (the pinned tab with the shield icon), review and agree to Honorlock's Terms of Service and the Exam Taker Privacy Notice, then select Continue.

Step 3: Begin Authentication

When you are ready to proceed, click Begin Authentication to start the identity verification process.

Step 4: Browser Guard (If Enabled)

If Browser Guard is enabled for your assessment, you will see a prompt before continuing. Once you click Continue, you will be restricted from accessing other applications or resources — any attempts will be flagged for review. You will then be asked to review Privacy Details and select I Understand to proceed.

Step 5: Allow Camera and Microphone Access

Honorlock requires access to your device's webcam and microphone. When prompted by your browser, click Allow. If you accidentally deny access, follow the steps in Honorlock's browser camera permissions guide.

Step 6: Take Your Photo

Center your face in the frame and click Take Photo. If you see a "Permission Denied by the computer" error, follow Honorlock's device camera permissions guide to resolve the issue.

Step 7: Provide a Photo ID

Hold a valid photo ID up to your camera and click Take ID Photo. Ensure the ID is centered and clearly visible. Accepted forms of ID include:

School or institution ID
Driver's license
Passport

Step 8: Complete the 360° Room Scan

Click Begin and slowly rotate your camera 360° to show your full testing environment, including your desk area. For guidance on completing an acceptable room scan, refer to Honorlock's room scan article.

Step 9: Confirm Your Room Scan Recording

After completing the scan, a playback will appear for your review. Once you are satisfied with the recording, click Submit.

Step 10: Start Screen Recording

Click Proceed to launch the screen recording. Then select the screen you wish to share and click Share.

Step 11: Access Your Atomic Assessment

Open a new tab and navigate back to your course page in the LMS. Locate the Atomic Assessments link and open it — just as you would for any other course assignment.

Important: Do not return to the Honorlock tab and click Launch again. Doing so will restart the entire authentication process (face photo, ID photo, room scan, and screen share).

If your Atomic Assessment requires login credentials, click the Open Exam Site button and sign in when prompted.

Step 12: Locate Your Assessment

Follow the guided prompt in the bottom-left corner of your browser window to locate your Atomic Assessment. Once you have found it, click I Have Found My Exam.

Step 13: Unlock and Enter Your Assessment

Click the Unlock Exam button in the guided prompt (bottom-left corner). This will automatically populate the assessment password in the required field. Click Submit (button label may vary slightly) to gain access and begin your assessment.

Note: If Browser Guard is not enabled, the blue border around the testing window will not appear. You can minimize the Honorlock Proctoring window at any time during your assessment.

Step 14: Submit Your Assessment

When you have completed your assessment, submit it through Atomic Assessments as normal.

Step 15: End Your Proctoring Session

Once you see the confirmation page, your proctoring session has ended. Close all tabs that were opened as part of the Honorlock launch process to fully submit your session.
