How to use the Self Evaluation Question Type

The Self Evaluation question lets students give themselves a score. This score shows up in SpeedGrader and can be used in the final grade. There are two different ways instructors use this question type:

Use case 1: Student gives themselves a score (no rubric)

What it’s for:

A simple self-assessment where the student picks a number as their score.

How it works:

  • You add a Self Evaluation question to an assessment.

  • Set how many points it’s worth.

  • The student enters the score they think they earned.

  • That number becomes their score for the question.

When to use it:

  • Participation or effort grading

  • Reflection activities

  • “What score do you think you deserve?” questions

Use case 2: Instructor scores themselves using a rubric

What it’s for:

Letting Instructors pick a score that matches a rubric level.

How it works:

  • The assignment uses a rubric.

  • The Self Evaluation question is tied to a specific rubric score.

  • The teacher selects the score.

  • That score fills in the rubric during grading.

What instructors see:

  • The rubric shows the teachers chosen level.

  • If the instructor changes it later, SpeedGrader shows “Rubric Overridden.”
