How To: Import Canvas Quizzes

This article describes how you can import your existing Canvas classic and New Quizzes into Atomic Assessments

You can import your existing Canvas Quizzes into Atomic Assessments using the Content Manager. Importing will create activities in the content manager that you can use to build a new assessment off of an existing activity or enhance other assessments.

We support the following types of Canvas Quiz imports:

  • Upload the course export - Export your entire Canvas course and upload the .imscc file to import both Canvas New Quizzes and Classic quizzes simultaneously.
  • Upload a Classic Quiz from a quiz export - See below
  • Upload a Canvas Classic Quiz within the same course - See below
  • Upload a Canvas New Quiz export - See below how to create this export file.  

NOTE:  Do not use the "Canvas Quizzes" tab in the Add Activities menu to import Canvas New Quizzes. The Canvas Quizzes tab is only for same-course Classic Quiz imports.

To import your files

  1. Navigate to the Assessments Manager and click on the 3 dot menu.
  2. Go to the Content Manager, click on the 3 dot menu in the upper right, and select the Add Content option in the menu.
  3. Upload your file.

 

Canvas New Quizzes Import

Import quizzes built with Canvas New Quizzes into Atomic Assessments. Once imported, content is available just like anything created natively.

Before You Begin

Canvas New Quizzes must be exported as a .zip file from Canvas before importing. You can export a single quiz or a full course export — both work.

To export from Canvas:

  1. In your Canvas course, go to Settings in the course navigation.
  2. Click Export Course Content.
  3. Select Course to export everything, or choose Quiz to export individual quizzes.
  4. Click Create Export. Canvas will prepare the file — you'll get a notification when it's ready.
  5. Click the download link to save the .zip file to your computer.

How to Import

  1. Open Atomic Assessments and go to the Import section.
  2. From the Import type dropdown, select Canvas New Quizzes.
  3. Upload your .zip export file.
  4. Click Upload file — the import runs in the background, so you can leave the page.
  5. Check back to see your import status:
    • Initialized — file received, waiting to process.
    • Started — conversion in progress.
    • Finished — content is ready to use.
    • Failed — something went wrong. See the error message on the import record.

What Gets Imported

  • Questions — stimulus text, answer options, and correct answer keys.
  • Items — reusable wrappers around questions.
  • Activities — the full quiz structure with its questions in order.

Imported content is automatically tagged with your course context so it stays organized.

Importing Classic Quizzes

If your course contains Classic Quizzes (not New Quizzes), you don't need to export a file. Use the Canvas Course/Quiz Export import type instead, which lets you select quizzes directly from your course.

Errors

Unsupported file type — only .zip files are accepted. Re-export from Canvas and make sure you download the .zip.

Conversion errors — individual questions that can't be mapped are skipped and logged. The rest of the import still completes.

Import failure — the entire import failed, usually due to a malformed or corrupted file. Try re-exporting from Canvas and importing again.
