Setting Up a Canvas Token in Atomic Assessments
Setting Up a Canvas Token in Atomic Assessments
Atomic Assessments supports storing a Canvas API token at the account level. When a Canvas token is configured, Atomic Assessments can locate assessment content that is embedded in course modules and pages — and automatically carry that content over when a course is copied. Without a token, Atomic Assessments may not be able to detect embedded content during course copy operations, which can result in missing or broken assessments in the destination course.
When Should You Update the Token?
Update or reset the Canvas token when:
- The token has expired or been revoked.
- Course copy is not carrying over embedded assessment content as expected.
- Your institution has rotated API credentials.
- You are setting up Atomic Assessments for the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do instructors need to set up a token?
No. The token is configured at the account level by an administrator and applies globally across the institution.
What does "Token set" mean?
It means a valid Canvas API token is currently stored and Atomic Assessments is able to use it for course copy operations.
Will this affect existing courses?
Updating the token does not affect existing courses or assessments. It only changes how Atomic Assessments authenticates for future course copy operations.
💡 Note: The token only needs to be set once at the account level. Individual instructors do not need to configure anything.
