Atomic Discussions

Overview video of UI for Atomic Discussions

Features

  • RCE Support - Discussions now support rich text editing for prompts, replies, and feedback including bold, italic, underline, headings, and bulleted/numbered lists. You can also upload JPG and PNG images up to 500MB. HTML source view is not supported.
  • Feedback on Discussion Reply - A new discussion setting allows instructors to author a feedback message that students see immediately after their first reply to the discussion prompt. Instructors can configure whether this feedback is dismissible or if students can toggle its visibility.
  • Feedback on Student Reply - A new discussion setting allows instructors to author a feedback message that students see immediately after their first reply to another student. Instructors can configure whether this feedback is dismissible or if students can toggle its visibility.
  • Canvas Section filtering - Admins can configure discussion activities in the Admin Settings to restrict students to viewing replies only within their enrolled section or to allow viewing of replies across all sections. If instructors, TAs, or other roles are limited to specific sections, they will only see replies from students in those sections. Instructors with access to multiple sections will default to viewing replies from the first section in the course selector but can switch between sections as needed. A reinstall of the tool with the Canvas section custom parameter is necessary for this functionality to be supported.
  • Admin Setting to toggle Student OAuth - Admins can toggle whether or not students can authenticate (OAuth) with Atomic Discussions, enabling the tool to send notifications on their behalf. Notifications will not be sent unless this setting is enabled by an admin.
  • Notification support for replies - Students and instructors will receive Canvas inbox messages for new replies in Atomic Discussions. The first time someone accesses Atomic Discussions, they must authorize the tool via OAuth. Notifications include the name of the replier, the original post prompt, the original post content, the reply content, and a link to view the discussion in Atomic Discussions.

Bug Fixes

  • Discussions Not Deleting from Content Manager – Deleting discussions through the Content Manager now correctly removes them from the system as expected.
  • Missing Discussion Page URL in Reported Messages – When a discussion was reported, the notification message sent to the course coordinators did not include a direct link to the discussion page for review and action in LTI 1.3 versions of the tool.
  • PDF Export Failure for Discussions – While CSV exports function correctly, PDF exports for discussion reports previously failed, causing an endless loading state without an error message. This issue has been resolved, and PDF exports now complete successfully.
  • Course-Wide Export Issues for Histograms and Results – The ability to export histograms and results for an entire course in PDF and CSV format was either unavailable or failed to complete. The system previously displayed an "Exporting" message without proceeding. This issue has been addressed, and exports now function as expected.

Atomic Polls

Features

  • Support for Non-Logged-In Users in Public Canvas Courses in LTI 1.3 – We have added support for non-logged-in users to participate in polls within public Canvas courses for LTI 1.3 installs.

Bug Fixes

  • Missing Label for Live Results Toggle in Atomic Polls – The toggle for live results in Atomic Polls now correctly displays its label, ensuring clarity for users.
  • "Download Results as a Single File" Not Working in Atomic Polls – Clicking the "Download Results as a Single File" button in Atomic Polls previously did nothing, with no file downloaded and no error message displayed. This issue occurred when accessing the option from the Canvas course navigation or in Brightspace. This issue has been resolved, and the file now downloads correctly.
