The Assessment Manager in Brightspace

The Assessment Manager is the hub inside your Brightspace (D2L) course where you preview, create, edit, and manage every assessment in that course. This guide covers what the Manager does, how to add it, and how it differs from an individual assessment you insert for students.

A note on naming: You'll see this tool referred to two ways. The link you add from the LMS menu is often called the Atomic Assessments Activity Manager (the exact link name is set by your organization and may differ). Once launched, the embedded tool is the Assessment Manager. They're the same tool and this article uses Assessment Manager throughout.

What you can do in the Assessment Manager

The Assessment Manager is your course-level authoring and management workspace. From it you can:

  • Browse and preview every assessment in the course from one library view

  • Create new assessments using the full set of question types

  • Edit and reuse existing assessments across modules

  • Run bulk actions on multiple assessments at once

  • Setup gradebook integration for each assessment as you build or insert it

Teachers and other staff work in the Assessment Manager; students launch the individual assessments you insert into your LMS content.

Adding the Assessment Manager to your courses or course template

Atomic Assessments must already be installed and registered as an LTI tool for your Brightspace instance (an org-level, admin-managed step). If the link doesn't appear in the steps below, check with your admin. You'll need instructor/author permissions in the course to complete the following:

  1. Navigate to the course or course template.
    1. To save time, consider adding the assessment manager to your course templates to avoid adding the manager to each course individually.
  2. Go to the Content tab.
  3. You can choose which module you want to add the assessment manager to or create a new module for the assessment manager.
  4. Click on the Existing Activities dropdown and choose the External Learning Tools option.
  5. In the popup, select the Atomic Assessments Activity Manager.
    1. Please note that depending on your configuration, this link may have a different name for your organization; please check with your admin to confirm the link name.
  6. Clicking on the link will embed the Assessment Manager into your module. Click on the Assessment Manager to launch Atomic Assessments.
