Push Assessments

Overview

Push copies one or more assessments from the course you are in into other courses. On later pushes, it updates the copies already sitting in those courses from the original.

You can push a single assessment or many at once, to a single course or to dozens.

Why push instead of exporting and importing?

Atomic Assessments gives you three ways to move content between courses:

• Push. One source course is the master. Send assessments out to many courses at once, then re-push to update those courses when the master changes.
• Download Content and Add Content (.zip). A one-time transfer, including across institutions or LMSs. Each import creates a fresh copy with no link back to the original.
• Publish Version and Import Version using the Version Keys. Sharing a snapshot of the course with someone else, who can import it on their own schedule.

Push is the one built for maintaining the same assessment in many courses over time. It is the right tool when:

• You run multiple sections of the same course. Build the quiz once in a master or sandbox course, push it to every section, and every section gets the identical assessment.
• You have to fix something after you have already distributed it. Correct a wrong answer key, a typo, a changed due date or a time limit once in the source course, then push again. The copies in the destination courses are updated in place. Exporting a corrected .zip cannot do this. It would add a second, duplicate assessment to every course and leave the wrong one there.
• You do this every term. Your destination courses are saved as an Associated Courses list, so the second and every later push is a few clicks rather than a fresh selection.
• You want to push settings without touching content, or content without touching settings. The push step lets you choose. See Step 5.

Use Download Content instead when the destination is in a different LMS or a different institution's Atomic Assessments, or when you want an archive file on disk. Push only works between courses in the same Atomic Assessments installation.

How to push assessments

Step 1: Turn on bulk actions

Skip Steps 1 and 2 if you only want to push one assessment. See "Pushing a single assessment" below.

1. Open the Assessment Manager (also labeled Activity Manager) in your source course.
2. Open the three-dot menu at the top of the assessment list.
3. Choose Enable bulk actions. A checkbox column will appear to the left of your assessment list.

Step 2: Select the assessments and start the push

1. Check the box beside each assessment you want to send.
2. A Bulk Actions (N selected) bar replaces the title bar. Click the Push Assessments icon, the upward arrow.
   

Step 3: Choose your destination courses

The Push Assessments screen lists your Associated Courses.

• The list starts with courses you have pushed to before, and stays saved between sessions. You do not have to rebuild it each term.
• To add a course, type its title, short name, or SIS ID into the search box and select it. It stays on the list until you remove it with the X at the end of its row.
• If a course you expect is not in the search results, open Atomic Assessments in that course once. The tool only learns you are an author in a course after it has been launched there.
• If a course appears but its checkbox is greyed out, you do not have author rights in that course. Ask someone who does to run the push, or have your rights corrected in the course.
• Your current course never appears. An assessment cannot be pushed into the course it came from.

Check the box beside each destination course, then click Next.

Step 4: Choose what to push

On the Push Assessments - Settings screen, choose what the push should carry:

• Update assessment content. The questions and items themselves.
• Update assessment settings. The assessment's own settings, such as number of attempts, time limit, feedback timing, proctoring, and gradebook options.
• Update course settings. The source course's course-level Atomic Assessments settings.

Then click Push.

Important: what these checkboxes control.

• If the assessment is not in the destination course yet, it is created there no matter what you check. These options govern only what happens to a copy that is already there from an earlier push.
• For a re-push, check the boxes for the parts you want overwritten. If you fixed a question, check Update assessment content. If you changed the due date or number of attempts, check Update assessment settings. Anything you leave unchecked is left alone in the destination course, which is how you push a content fix without wiping per-section due dates.
• Update course settings on its own is not enough to start a push. You must also check content or settings. The Push button stays disabled until you do.

Confirmation

A Pushing N assessments to M courses indicator appears above your assessment list and changes to Push completed when the job finishes. You can keep working while it runs.

Larger pushes can take longer. The indicator will let you know when it's complete. content push finishes.

Pushing a single assessment

You do not need bulk actions for one assessment. On its row in the assessment list, open the three-dot menu and choose Push Updates. That takes you to the same Step 3 through Step 5 flow above.

Notes and troubleshooting

• The push does not delete anything. It creates or updates. It never removes an assessment from a destination course.
• You cannot push into the course you are pushing from.
• No Push option anywhere? Push can be turned off for an institution. Contact Atomic Jolt Support.
