Partial Match Scoring allows students to receive partial credit based on their selected answers in a question. This is particularly useful for questions with multiple correct answers, as it provides a more nuanced grading method.
Steps to Enable Partial Match (or Partial Match Per Response)(+/-) Scoring
1.Navigate to the Activity Manager
•Log in to your Canvas instance and open Atomic Assessments.
•Access the Activity Manager for the assignment you want to edit.
2.Open the Assignment
•Locate the assignment in the list.
•Click on the Edit Question List option.
3.Select the Specific Question
•Scroll through the list of questions or search for the question you wish to modify.
•Click on the question to open its settings.
4.Access More Options
•Scroll down within the question settings until you see the More options section.
5.Set Scoring Type
•In the More options section, locate Scoring type.
•Select Partial Match from the dropdown menu.
6.Configure Deductions for Extra Selections
•Set the value for Points deducted for extra selections (when multiple responses are enabled).
•This determines how many points are subtracted for each incorrect extra answer a student selects.
Figure 1: Shows where and how to enable Partial Match Scoring as well as point deductions for additional distractors.
Example Scenario (For Partial Match):
Partial Match: Whole question is worth X Points.
•Question Setup (a scenario):
•The question includes 4 options, with 2 correct answers.
•The question is worth 2 points total
•The points deducted per incorrect answer is set to 2
•Scoring Calculation:
•If a student selects both correct answers and 1 incorrect answer:
•Deduction for the incorrect extra answer: -1 point
•Final Score: 2 - 1 = 1
•Key Behavior:
•Students are penalized for incorrect extra responses, encouraging thoughtful selection.
In most cases setting the point total per question, and the point deduction for incorrect answer to equal, is the desired outcome. (I.e 2 and 2)

Additional Notes & Documentation:
•Partial Match Scoring works best for multiple-select questions where precision is critical.
•Make sure to communicate the scoring criteria to students so they understand how their responses will be graded.
