How do I use Respondus in Atomic Exams?

Respondus in Atomic Assessments


This document outlines how to configure the Respondus LockDown Browser, the exam setup process, and the student experience. This feature is currently only available in Canvas. 

Assignment Setup

  1. Create a new exam in Atomic Assessments.
  2. Select the Proctoring tab in the exam.

  3. Beneath Proctor Settings select 'Enable proctoring for this assignment'. 
  4. The Respondus settings will appear. Select the settings applicable to your exam.
    1. Assessment Options settings
      1. Disable virtual machine – This disables Virtual Machine and Thin Client use.
      2. Hide toolbar – This hides the Respondus toolbar.
      3. Enable spell check – This enables spell check for the exam.
      4. Enable printing – This allows the student to print the exam.
      5. Enable calculator – This enables a calculator for the exam.

    2. Lockdown Options 
      1. Low security – This security level means that no fullscreen requirements will be enforced during the exam.
      2. Medium security – This security level forces the exam to be taken in fullscreen, preventing access to other applications and websites. The student will be instantly removed from the exam if they navigate away from the exam page for more than 30 seconds.
      3. Medium-high security – This security level forces the exam to be taken in fullscreen, preventing access to other applications and websites. The student will be instantly removed from the exam if they navigate away from the exam page for more than 15 seconds.
      4. High security – This security level forces the exam to be taken in fullscreen, preventing access to other applications and websites. The student will be instantly removed from the exam if they navigate away from the exam page.
      5. Very high security – This security level forces the exam to be taken in fullscreen, preventing access to other applications and websites. It also blocks the use of the refresh button. The student will be instantly removed from the exam if they navigate away from the exam page.
    3. Advanced Options
      1. Set proctor exit password – This allows the instructor to set a password that the student must enter if they want to exit Respondus. They will be able to set one of the two types of passwords below.
        1. Plain text password
        2. Encrypted password
      2. Set a custom list of allowed programs – This allows you to designate a list of which programs your students are allowed to have open while taking the exam.
        1. Allow list – List the programs with a comma in between each, with no spaces after each comma. For example, to allow your students to use Zoom and Chrome during the exam, enter "zoom.exe,chrome.exe" for Windows and "zoom,chrome" for Mac. Enter '.exe' at the end of each Windows program.
      3. Set a custom list of disallowed programs – This allows you to designate a list of which programs your students are not allowed to have open while taking the exam. 
        1. Block list – List the programs with a comma in between each, with no spaces after each comma. For example, to allow your students to use Zoom and Chrome during the exam, enter "zoom.exe,chrome.exe" for Windows and "zoom,chrome" for Mac. Enter '.exe' at the end of each Windows program.
      4. Set a different language for this assignment – This allows you to designate that the exam be shown in a different language. This setting defaults to English (language code 'en_US'). If you select this setting but leave the Language code input box blank it will default back to English. 
        1. Language code – To find a list of of the language codes click here. The language codes are a combination of the ISO 639-1 language codes, an underscore (_), and the ISO Alpha 2 country code.
  5. Save and then Publish the exam.

Student Experience

  1. Log in as a student.
  2. Launch the exam.
    1. Install the browser if you haven’t already by clicking Download Respondus and selecting your operating system (OS).
  3. Once the browser has been installed, click the I’m Ready to Begin button for the exam. 
  4. The exam will open the Respondus browser and launch the exam in the new window. You can close the browser once you have finished submitting the exam.
