Upcoming changes to Atomic Search to optimize usage of Canvas APIs

Starting August 1, 2026 Instructure will begin charging vendors, including Atomic Jolt, for Canvas API calls. In response, we are making a number of changes to Atomic Search to optimize Canvas API usage and manage the added cost.

Considerations

The most immediate change is that customers will need to enable sending Canvas Live Events to Atomic Search in order for your indexes to continue to be updated. Please do that as soon as possible.

If you have any questions, please feel free to file a ticket or email support@atomicjolt.com.

Changes

See below the changes we are making to Atomic Search to understand how that will affect your usage of Atomic Search.

  • Canvas Live Events will be required — Customers will be required to enable Canvas Live Events for Atomic Search. This allows Canvas to notify Atomic Search when course content changes, eliminating the need for Atomic Search to periodically poll the Canvas API to check for updates.
  • Canvas API usage reports — New reports will be available to Application Administrators showing their Canvas API call quota, monthly usage, instances where limits were reached, and forecasted usage.
  • Canvas API rate limits added to subscriptions — Because Instructure will charge Atomic Jolt per Canvas API call, monthly limits will be added to Atomic Search subscriptions to cap the number of API calls made on behalf of each subscription. For most customers, this will not affect the performance or functionality of Atomic Search. Customers with large amounts of frequently changing content may encounter these limits. Reports and alerts will help customers understand when and why limits are reached, the impact on their instance, and options for managing API quota usage.
  • Find and Replace will cache content — To reduce the number of Canvas API calls required by the Find and Replace feature, Atomic Search will cache Canvas content at the time of indexing.
  • New indexing limited to the past 4 years — Atomic Search will no longer automatically index content from courses with start dates older than 4 years. For courses without start dates, or with start dates older than 4 years, administrators can visit the course and manually request indexing.
  • Content older than 5 years will be removed from indexes — Beginning in January 2027, Atomic Search will begin removing indexed content from courses with start dates older than 5 years.
  • Canvas Data 2 required for onboarding — New customers will be required to provide Atomic Search access to Canvas Data 2 during onboarding. Access may be removed after initial indexing is complete if desired. Canvas Data 2 significantly reduces the number of API calls needed during the initial indexing process.
  • Canvas Data 2 support for additional indexing optimization — Customers who maintain ongoing Atomic Search access to Canvas Data 2 can reduce their API quota consumption by allowing Atomic Search to optimize indexing of content copied manually or via the Canvas Blueprint feature.
  • Premium subscription options — The following premium features are available. Contact sales@atomicjolt.com for pricing.
    • Extend automatic indexing beyond 4 years
    • Delay content removal beyond 5 years
    • Increase Canvas API call quotas
